- A margin percentage is undefined when revenue is zero. Costs greater than revenue correctly produce a negative margin.
How to use gross-margin calculator
Enter revenue and cost of goods sold for the same period and currency. Be explicit about which costs belong in cost of goods sold.
Gross profit equals revenue minus cost of goods sold. Gross margin divides that profit by revenue, while markup uses cost as the denominator.
Inspect how price, mix, and input costs change the result. A gross margin is not net profit because operating expenses and other items remain outside the calculation.
What to check before using the result
The calculation does not include operating expenses, interest, or tax.
- Match periods.
- Keep the cost definition consistent.
- Do not substitute markup for margin.
